In year 10, I formed a group with Louis, Jenna, Amy
and Bryony: me being the drummer, Louis being the guitarist and a singer, and
Amy, Jenna and Bryony singing together.
Before
beginning our rehearsals for Year 10, as a group we had discussions about how
we wanted this year’s rehearsals to go, and what we wanted to achieve with our
15-minute set:
·
Firstly,
we discussed the songs we will play for our 15-minute set. At first, we decided
that we’d play ‘Hallelujah’ by Jeff
Buckley, however we then decided to avoid this song and other songs which do
not consist of a drum beat because it would be difficult to apply a drum beat to
a song which sounds better without it. Secondly, we decided that we’d play ‘Mr Writer’ by Stereophonics, which
only me and Louis would play (the girls would sing another song of their own).
We liked this track because it consisted of a steady, consistent and catchy
beat which Louis could play to. Next, we decided that we’d play ‘Iris’ by the Goo Goo Dolls. We felt
like this was an effective song to play in our 15-minute set because Louis
already knew the guitar riff for this song, and the beat wasn’t too difficult,
so I could play it and adapt it in my own way so that it would sound great.
Next, we decided to play ‘Somewhere only
we know’ by a band called Keane. This was a good choice because we had
ideas of when each component of the song would come in (first was the guitar,
then the drums and then the singers). Finally, we decided to play ‘I see fire’ by Ed Sheeran. We felt
like this was an effective song to play because the girls could harmonise at
certain parts and I could vary the areas on the drum kit that I would play
(e.g. the rim of the snare, or the floor tom), and I could also use brushes to
create a more rustic effect to go with the guitar.
·
We
chose to have an order of the songs that we will play:
1. ‘Iris’
2. ‘Mr Writer’
3. ‘Somewhere only we know’
4. ‘I see fire’
·
We
decided that during each rehearsal (once we have an idea of the songs we are
playing) we will play the set from the top in the order that we have chosen to
play them in for our final performance, so we are used to playing them in
order.
